STPI x The Corner Shop
Collector's' Edition: Do Ho Suh: Smoke Detector, 348 West 22nd Street, New York, NY 10011, USA (2017)
Cyanotype on Saunders Waterford 638gsm paper
30 X 30 cm
STPI depicts figures and architectural elements with thread that is then embedded
in paper pulp. He has since returned to the Creative Workshop to develop and
translate concepts of cultural displacement and the ‘self’ into enchanting two- and
three-dimensional forms of greater complexity and scale, producing ‘3D thread
drawings’ and pastel-rubbed 1:1 scale renditions of objects. Smoke Detector, 3 48
West 22nd Street, New York, NY 10 011, USA (2017) extends these explorations in
the cyanotype technique – a first for the artist. Here Suh takes his fabric sculptures
a step further, collapsing two- and three-dimensionality and distilling the object
into a mere skeletal trace.
The Collector's Edition marks fifteen years of celebrated collaborations between STPI and its artists.
